Security

Crime, mostly in the form of petty theft, is the security concern in France that is most likely to affect travelers. Racially-motivated crime has become a growing problem in recent years. Strikes occur frequently in France. Demonstrations and protests are common occurrences in the country. The threat of terrorism remains a significant concern across France.

Airport Considerations

Recommended:
  • LFMD – Cannes Mandelieu Airport
  • LFMN – Nice Côte d’Azur

Alternative:

  • LFMQ – Le Castellet International Airport
  • LFTH – Toulon Hyères
  • LFML – Marseille Provence Airport
  • LFTZ – Saint Tropez Airport

The French Riviera airports usually become busy during the event periods and parking availability is often limited. Operators may need to consider dropping off the passengers and repositioning the aircraft for parking. Should you be limited to operations into Cannes or Nice, please consider Marseille or Le Castellet as flexible options. Toulon or Saint Tropez can be considered, provided that the lead time for prior notice and the operating restrictions are met. The best practice is to start planning as early as possible.

About Red Bull Air Race

Red Bull Air Race Pilots and Airplanes

Pilots from around the world are represented in the Red Bull Air Race and are divided into Master Class and Challenger Class groups. Red Bull Air Race Pilots

The race planes flown in the Red Bull Air Race World Championship are designed to be as light as possible to ensure maximum speed. Race planes also have to be extremely robust and tolerate stresses of up to 10 times the force of gravity. The propeller-driven aircraft are highly maneuverable and can achieve vertical orientation at high speeds with little effort, which is something that modern fighter jets cannot match. Plane Specifications

Previously, race teams were allowed to modify their aircraft and since 2014, all engines and propellers have been standardized. The specified engine and propeller have both undergone rigorous testing. Both pilots and their teams are now dedicating their efforts to perfecting the airframe aerodynamics of their aircraft, as well as their pilot skills.

Rules

At least eight pilots participate in each international race and the objective is to navigate an aerial racetrack with air-filled pylons in the fastest possible time while incurring as few penalties as possible. Pilots can win World Championship points at each race and the pilot who has the most points after the last race of the season is awared the Red Bull Air Race World Champion title. Complete Red Bull Air Race Rules

Red Bull Aerial Racetracks

The racetracks for the Red Bull Air Race are uniquely designed for the high speed, low altitude sport and are set up in the most breath-taking locations on the planet such as the beautiful Corniche in Abu Dhabi.

Each track consists of the Start and Finish Gate, three or four two-pylon gates, which the pilots have to fly straight and level between and a chicane that comprises of three individual pylons that pilots will have to bank around. At one end of the course, a Vertical Turning Manoeuvre is included. This is where the pilots have to fly through the gate, then turn as quickly and efficiently as possible without pulling more than 10G in their raceplane and then fly towards the next gate. On average there will be five straight and level gates (where up to two could be for Vertical Turning Manoeuvres) and a three-pylon chicane. More Track Details
