Belgian Grand Prix

Trip Planning Guide: Grand Prix - Belgium

The 2018 Belgian Grand Prix is being held August 24-26 in Spa-Francorchamps, Spa. The event is not expected to cause any issues at Belgium airports; however, the demand on hotels and transportation close to and surrounding Francorchamps will be very high.

Security

Security Level: 3
The main security concern in Belgium is crime, mostly petty theft.  Demonstrations are a concern, primarily due to the disruption they sometimes cause to traffic. Strikes also occur occasionally in Belgium, and may affect transportation and public services. The threat of terrorism remains a significant concern in Belgium.

World Fuel Services partners with UnitedHealthcare Global Risk to offer superior security intelligence and risk mitigation services. Special reports are provided by UnitedHealthcare Global Risk.

Hotel Accommodations

There is a shortage of reasonably priced hotels close to the track. It is worth the time to search for hotel choices in the towns of Stavelot (5km), Malmedy (6km), and Spa (13km). For sensibly priced accommodations further away, we recommend you consider the beautiful mid-sized cities of Liege (Belgium – 60km northwest of circuit), Aachen (Germany – 60km north of Spa), Maastricht (Netherlands – 70km north of circuit) and Luxembourg (85km south of Spa). These cities would make an excellent base for racing fans. Visitors will enjoy authentic cuisine, unique shopping, and charming historical sites. Your driving patience is needed on race day with high traffic to the Spa Francorchamps circuit.

Airport Considerations

There are two primary airports to consider for this event: Liege (EBLG) is the closest and is about a 40-minute drive to the race track. The second is Brussels (EBBR), a 30-minute drive. Both are international airports of entry.

Per EU regulation 300/3008, all charter flights are subject to full aviation security checks upon departure. All crew, passengers, and luggage will be security screened in accordance with EU regulations in the same manner that commercial flights are screened. This means that items such as any liquids above 100 ml will not be allowed onboard. It’s important to advise passengers of these requirements. Best practice is to plan ahead and allow additional time to complete security screening.
