World Fuel Services Goes Carbon-Neutral, Showcasing its Sustainability Capabilities

World Fuel Services offset its footprint at NBAA-BACE through the purchase of carbon credits supplied by Kinect Energy Group, an energy solutions division within World Fuel Services. Included were our activities such as transportation and hotel accommodation for staff and fuel supply at Henderson Executive Airport (HND), which have come from sustainable sources or covered by carbon offsets.

As a member of the Coalition of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), we have and continue to support the business aviation industry’s goal to reduce carbon emissions by 50% by 2050 including this event, as well as other ongoing activities. Since 2015, World Fuel Services has delivered more than 13.6 million gallons of SAF to business and commercial aviation customers.

New Flight Department Sustainability Solutions

World Fuel Services together and its sister division, Kinetic Energy Group, are making it easier for flight departments and fixed-base operations (FBOs) to minimize their climate impact. We now offer sustainability solutions including renewable power sourcing with renewable energy certificates, evaluation and management of both on-site and off-site solar projects with power purchase agreements (PPAs), and sustainability strategy consulting.

These new solutions will offer aircraft operators and FBO partners a variety of sustainability solutions, including the ability to purchase carbon offsets and competitively access renewable power and fuel, allowing them to better respond to rapidly developing global emissions standards and advance their own sustainability programs.

“Kinect Energy Group’s deep experience in energy management and sustainability will enable us to create targeted solutions for our business aviation customers. We can quickly explore and deliver solutions designed to help our customers achieve their sustainability goals,” says Darren Fuller, vice president of business development for business aviation at World Fuel Services.

New FBO Sustainability Program

For its FBO and airport customers, World Fuel Services offers the ability to combine bulk fuel with carbon offset purchases, allowing FBOs to enhance their offering to their customers as well. We have updated our Total Aviation Software and TotalFBO applications to make it possible for FBOs to offer their customers the opportunity to buy carbon offsets for each flight when fueling.

In addition to offsets for fuel use, we provide sustainability consulting and solar project management services for an FBO’s ground operations. Our experts help customers navigate the myriad rules and regulations and help them maximize financial returns, which can be substantial.

“We’ve been at the forefront of sustainability and alternative fuels for the aviation industry,” says Mike Szczechowski, World Fuel Services Senior Vice President of business and general aviation. “It all started with the supply of SAF. As part of enhancing our sustainability offering for business aviation, we now have the global capabilities of our Kinect Energy Group business to complement our fuel supply and aviation services.”

Earlier this year, the company provided fuel for an SAF event at Van Nuys Airport (VNY) and supplied Europe’s first SAF demonstration at Farnborough Airport in the United Kingdom before the European Business Aviation Conference & Exhibition (EBACE). The company’s partnership with Clark County, Nevada is another example of the broad expertise, where it is providing SAF at HND for NBAA-BACE aircraft. An estimated 150,000 gallons of SAF are expected to be consumed during the convention weeks.

Kinect Energy Group’s expertise is evidenced by its work for large European airports such as London Gatwick Airport (LGW), where it advised the airport on how to achieve carbon-neutrality and provided carbon offsets to assist it in accomplishing this goal. Kinect Energy Group has also worked with Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to build and incorporate solar power as part of its renewable energy sourcing program.
